A couple in Thirumangalam, Madurai were arrested for strangling their 16-year-old daughter to death in a supposed attempt to save the family’s honour.

The parents claimed that their daughter G Analakshmi committed suicide because of unbearable stomach ache and her failure in the Class X supplementary exams. However, the autopsy report prompted police to investigate further, as the strangulation marks were not that of a suicide. The coupled cracked under during investigation and confessed to having strangled their fourth and youngest daughter for having relationships with many boys from the village; the parents suspected she had even had physical relationships with some boys. The daughter refused to change her ways, prompting her parents to take this extreme step to save themselves from embarrassment, they said.
