Assembly Secretariat in Chennai has announced that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is to have its first Session in the New Year commencing from 08th January.

As it is the first Session in a new year, it would commence with a customary inaugural address by Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who has become hugely unpopular among ruling party MLAs for interfering with the State’s administrative affairs. After the inaugural day, the Assembly would have a ‘holiday’ on the very next day i.e. on 09th January.

It would debate for three days – 10, 11 and 12 January – about various issues raised in the Governor’s speech, providing Opposition parties enough opportunities to record their views on issues of concern. The Business Committee of the Assembly would decide soon on the duration of the Session; chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami’s speech on the floor of the Assembly would mark the last day of the Session.

Speaker Dhanapal is also likely to administer the oath of office and secrecy to AIADMK dissident and independent MLA Dinakaran, who won last week’s R.K. Nagar by-polls in Chennai.
