The Tamil Nadu government announced in an assembly on Tuesday that it will take measures to ban the video-sharing app TikTok as it has led teens and young adults to participate in acts of “cultural degradation” after it was found that sexually explicit content was being shared through the app.

In response to a query from AIADMK MLA Thamimun Ansari in the Tamil Nadu Assembly regarding the app misleading kids with its “vulgar content,” the state IT minister said, “We will take up the matter with Centre to take action, the same way blue whale game was banned.” The app also led to several issues in the past, including the suicide of a man in October last year for being shamed over the attires he had worn in the videos.

The TikTok company responded to the Tamil Nadu government’s efforts to ban the app, stating, “At TikTok, maintaining a safe and positive in-app environment is our priority. We have robust measures to protect users against misuse, including easy reporting mechanisms that enable users and law enforcement to report content that violates our terms of use and community guidelines. We are committed to respecting local laws and regulations, and in order to better coordinate with law enforcement agencies, we are also in the process of hiring a chief nodal officer based out of India.”

The “express yourself” video app that allows its users to share short clips of their talents/performances gained traction in India recently, with at least 20 million people from the country currently using the application.
