Tamil cinema is undoubtedly the only state in the whole world that has produced five chief ministers of state. First it was C.N Annadurai one of the fathers of the Dravidian moment who became the first chief minister of Tamil Nadu. The well learned Anna as is fondly remembered as used his impeccable oratory and stage writing skills to reach to the people through his works which was much easier than for someone from a different background to do so. Next was the legendary screenwriter M. Karunanidhi hailed as the shrewdest politician ever in the Indian subcontinent. The Kalaigniar used the powerful medium of cinema to expose his ideologies to the people through a number of his films.
MGR had already become a demigod during the three decades before he became chief minister in 1980. He had carefully build an image of dogooder, a man with high virtues and a leader of great charishma through his films and his songs which helped him to a landslide victory and held the office for thirteen long years untill his death.
V.N Janaki ofcourse came to power and held the office briefly after her husband MGRs death becoming the fourth Kollywood personality to occupy the high office. The came Jayalalitha the prodigy of MGR who apart from all the clout she held endeared herself with the masses as one of the most magnetic women on screen. It clearly helped her to define herself as an ironwilled and strong woman later on when she held power for a record five times.
In present day Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have started their march towards the power grid and there is no mistaking that both have entertained the masses for close to a century between them. While other politicians have to struggle to get across to the people to explain their mandates the Thalaivar and Andavar duo will find it very easy. All indications point to another Kollywood personality ascending the throne again and whether one likes it or not there is no mistaking the power of the medium called Tamil cinema.
