A History teacher in Kolkatta climbs a tree to get internet connectivity and teach his students online. Subrata Pati, who teaches history at two educational institutes in Kolkata (Adamas University and RICE Education) takes classes online following the lockdown. Due to poor internet connectivity, the teacher is now often found perched on a neem tree trying to catch signals to teach his students. Apparently, the 35-year-old now claims to receive uninterrupted connectivity.
"I have temporarily shifted from my Kolkata residence to Ahanda, which is a part of the state's Jangalmalal area, to be with my family in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis. That done, I couldnt have shrugged off my responsibility as a teacher. The Internet network here is mostly patchy, so I had to look for a solution," he said.
Subrata has made a tree-top platform made of bamboo, gunny sacks and hay, to conduct the classes. Pati takes food and water with him while he climbs up as he takes two to three classes at a stretch.
"Sometimes the heat and the urge to pee bother me, but I am trying to adjust... sometimes storms and thundershower damage the platform, but I try and fix it the next day. Under no circumstances I would want my students to be inconvenienced," he says.
