Shops and various establishments across Tamilnadu can stay open 24x7 on all days of the year, for a timespan of three years, and a notification for the same will soon be published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette. Earlier in 2016 the central government had announced the Shops and Establishments bill which involves regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service that enables theatres, restaurants, banks, shops, and other workplaces to be kept open 24x7 on all days.
The Centre had announced it as a legislative suggestion and said that the States can either adopt the Bill as such or modify it pertaining to the situation in corresponding states. Last year Maharashtra allowed shops, hotels and restaurants to be opened open 24x7 and till March 2017, Tamil Nadu enabled opening of shops and establishments 24x7 for one year and this was extended further to three years. Now the TN government has accepted the proposal by Commissioner of Labour and to allow shops and establishments to be opened 24x7 on all days of the year, with proper measures for women employee safety.
One day holiday will be given per week for every employee on rotation basis and employers must make sure employees don't work more than eight hours in a day or more than 48 hours in a week and including overtime, the work period must not be more than 10.5 hours in a day and 57 hours per week, and women won't be required to work after 8 p.m. though by written consent of the woman employee, can let her work between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
