In a huge loss to the Indian theatre industry, the legend Ebrahim Alkazi, 95, passed away yesterday after a massive heart attack at Escorts Hospital in New Delhi, as said by his son and theatre director Feisal Alkazi.
Alkazi is celebrated for revolutionising theatre in India, and was a famous theatre artiste in Mumbai during the 1940s and 50s. Alkazi also served as the director of National School of Drama (NSD) for th 15 years, and shaped the course of modern Indian theatre, and made celebrated versions of Greek tragedies, Shakespeare, Chekov and August Strindberg.
Actor Kamal Haasan, one of the finest actors of the world has posted a condolence message on Twitter, as he tweeted "A beacon of Indian theatre art and mentor of many great actors, Mr. Ebrahim Alkazi will be remembered for many generations. His love for theatre and the art is unmatched. My deepest condolences to the family and the NSD family."
