The usual impression is that a politician would be corrupt - Ashutosh

Enacting the role of a politician, Ashutosh Rana first made a huge impression with 'Zakhm' (1998). Ever since then he has played a politician in number of films but when it comes to his latest release 'Monica', Ashutosh insists that it is indeed a different affair. Reason being that this time around he is someone who is a victim instead of being a tormentor.

When you talk of a politician in film, the usual impression is that he would be corrupt, says Ashutosh who plays the role of Chandrakant Pandit in the film, It is different in case of Monica though because Chandrakant is the kind of politician who is Mr. Clean. Of course he gets into situations where he has to walk a thin rope but that doesn't qualify him as corrupt by any means.

The film is rumoured to be based on the infamous telecom scandal that had rocked the nation a few years ago. The prime players in this scandal were a charismatic Minister (supposed to be based on Pramod Mahajan, who is no more) and a female journalist who was killed under mysterious circumstances.

Well, I don't know about the facts but from fiction perspective I can tell you that Chandrakant is someone who never wanted to get into politics, says Ashutosh, He is an IFS officer and though he is disinterested in politics, he has to join in as his father is a solid pillar in this field. He brings in a new dimension to politics when he joins in as he is suave, sophisticated and has a gift of gab. It is to be seen though that how much politics and Chandrakant change each other.

Though the makers aren't saying it, it is being whispered in close circles that now that the film has released, it could well open the Pandora's box due to it's controversial subject.

Yes, there is a telecom scam which is shown in the film and how Chandrakant becomes a victim of all the politics around him, admits Ashutosh, All of it is done to snatch power from his hands and though he knows that he is totally innocent, he is trapped as he is unable to prove so. In the game of power and politics that also involves murder; he struggles to find his way out.
