Come November 9, it is going to be an interesting contestation. Three films belonging to three different genres are set in three different socio-cultural milieus.

The seemingly ‘chinna cinema’ first. Bus Stop, directed by Maruthi, is set in the metropolis of Hyderabad and has characters that are not only youthful, but also have their mundane preoccupations. In contrast to their breezy lives are the somewhat idealistic and serious lives of the characters played by Nayanatara and Rana in KVJ.

In Nagarjuna’s Damarukam, Anushka seems to be in the midst of a life-threatening problem and Nagarjuna is engaged in a battle with the supernatural.

If Bus Stop comes with the promise of chirpy bonhomie and candyfloss romance, Damarukam invokes mythology. If the former is filled with humour, the latter is enriched by graphics. As for KVJ, it seems to be a right mix of action and theatre drama.

While Maruthi may be experimenting yet again on the lines of Ee Rojullo, Srinivas Reddy is touted to be attempting the unseen on Indian screen. Krish, for once, may well stir the souls with the idealism of his theme. All the three have something in common, though. Their films are non-formulaic.
