The Emmy nominations for the best television shows of the year have been announced, and there's plenty to discuss. While some expected nominations for popular shows like The Bear and Better Call Saul were received, there were also notable absences. The ongoing writers strike and a potential SAG strike have put a spotlight on the work of these artists.
One disappointment was the overlooking of Sydney Sweeney for her nuanced performance in Reality. Despite her breakout role in Euphoria, Sweeney has consistently proven her talent. In Reality, she delivered a measured and melancholic portrayal of a person whose life becomes invaded. Her omission from the nominations was a glaring oversight.
Sarah Goldberg's work on Barry has also gone unnoticed. Her performance as the troubled Sally Reed in the final season was exceptional. She brought depth to the character, capturing her insecurity and sadness with subtlety. Goldberg's portrayal was a grounding force in a show that took big creative swings.
Damson Idris's captivating performance in Snowfall was another snub. As Franklin Saint, he portrayed a character descending into darkness with equal parts tragedy and terror. Idris drew viewers in with mesmerizing intensity, making his absence from the nominations feel incomplete.
Emma D'Arcy's scene-stealing moment in House of the Dragon was overlooked as well. They brought breath-taking intensity to their scene as Rhaenrya Targaryen, driving the show forward. It's puzzling that Emmy voters didn't recognize this standout performance.
While Obi-Wan Kenobi received some recognition, it wasn't the best Star Wars show of recent times. Andor, with its exceptional performances, deserved more attention. Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, and Fiona Shaw all delivered noteworthy performances that could have shaken up the nominations.
Jury Duty getting a nomination while Rings of Power received none was a surprising turn of events. It's an unexpected outcome in today's world. What We Do in the Shadows and Interview with the Vampire also received limited recognition, despite their outstanding elements.
The Emmy nominations cover shows that aired from June 2022 to May 2023. The 75th Primetime Emmys are scheduled for September 18, although potential strikes may affect the telecast date. A host has not yet been named.
While there were notable nominations like “Succession” and “Last of us”, there were also disappointments and surprising choices. The Emmys continue to be a mix of excitement and letdown for television enthusiasts.
