Actor Danny Masterson was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the rape of two women. He was convicted on two of the three forcible rape charges he faced earlier this year in a Los Angeles courtroom. The incidents occurred between 2001 and 2003 at his Hollywood Hills home while he was working on the TV show.
A prominent Scientologist, Masterson’s conviction came after several months in which he remained silent as survivors of his attacks were allowed to speak at hearings ahead of sentencing. Masterson maintains his innocence, but prosecutors argued that he used his position and his status to evade accountability. At his final hearing, he maintained silence before being sentenced to 30 years behind bars. Survivors were allowed to read impact statements ahead of sentencing.
He had his first trial in 2022 that ended without a verdict, and his re-trial concluded with his conviction this May. The family members, including Bijou Phillips wife and siblings, were present when the verdict was announced. He has been sentenced to 15 years to life for each of the two charges.
Judge Charlaine Olmedo said he had not just been a victim, as someone else’s voice and choice about two decades ago got robbed from him. The verdict is an endorsement of accountability for such crimes.
