On August 28th 2015 'Thani Oruvan' was released honestly on a low key note as it did not carry much more to it than the comeback of chocolate boy Arvind Swamy after a decade or so as the villain. Jayam Raja who had till then given several hits of predominantly remakes had the trade and the audience skeptical whether he could pull off an original. Little did anyone foresee that they would not only be watching a one of a kind thriller film in Tamil cinema but also the rebirth of a master original storyteller Mohan Raja.
'Thani Oruvan' is one of the most well-written screenplays that has been executed even more effectively on screen. It had well-defined characters that had the audiences rooting for everyone from Jayam Ravi's obsessive cop to Arvind Swamy's maniacal criminal to the proverbial sacrificial goat Thambi Ramaiah to all the friends among the cops. The unique concept of the hero finding his enemy and then challenging him to best him in itself hooks the audience instantly and keeps him/her glued till the very end. The film had a meaningful romance that also provided a contrast for the personal life of the villain that greatly illuminated characters. Among many intelligent scenes, the one that takes the cake and in fact the entire bakery is when Mithran saves the lives of his girl and the wife of Siddharth Abhimanyu in one single stroke which is actually a masterstroke in writing and filmmaking.
The announcement that Mohan Raja and Jayam Ravi are reuniting for 'Thani Oruvan' came several months ago and instantly became a footnote in true movie lovers minds who would be seeking updates on what the subject would now be, who that mightly villain could be and how different Mithran's journey of self-discovery would be this time With the time Mohan Raja is taking to write and his immense respect for writers is itself evidence that an epic is in the making just like four years ago.
