Thalapathy Vijay honoured the students in the second phase of TVK's grand felicitation event today. During the first phase, he addressed the dangers of drug abuse and criticized the state government over the toxic illicit liquor tragedy. In today's event, he discussed the inequality of the central government's NEET exam, highlighting its negative impact on the country. He said:
"I hadn't intended to make a speech today, but I felt compelled to address an important issue with you all. I want to discuss the NEET exam issue. The truth is that NEET deeply affects the students in Tamil Nadu, especially, particularly those from rural areas, poor financial backgrounds, and oppressed communities.
I believe there are three major issues with the NEET exam. Firstly, this model undermines the state's rights. Education was under state jurisdiction before 1975, but the central government later classified it as a general subject. I think this was the starting point of the issue.
The second problem is the concept of 'One Country, One Syllabus, One Exam.' In my view, this goes against the fundamental idea of education. Each state should have a syllabus that reflects its unique circumstances. I'm not saying this just because it undermines state rights, but because diversity in education is essential. Diversity is a strength, not a weakness.
Another important issue is the unfairness of conducting a nationwide exam based on the NCERT syllabus when students have been studying in their native language under the SCERT syllabus. This discrepancy makes medical education extremely difficult for students from rural areas. Lastly, we witnessed numerous discrepancies in the last NEET exam held on May 5th. Such incidents have led to a loss of trust in NEET among the public.
So, what is the solution to this problem? I believe that the NEET exam should be exempted. In this regard, I support the Tamil Nadu government's recommendation for an exemption from NEET. I hope the central government respects the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu and resolves this issue promptly.
The permanent solution to this situation should be to restore education as a state's right. If there are challenges in achieving this, a temporary special concurrent list could be created, specifically addressing education and public health. Currently, while the state government holds some authority over matters on the general subjects, the central government controls them completely.
The union government can conduct NEET exams in the institutions under its control like AIIMS, JIPMER, PGI etc. Students should not feel pressured while studying. The world offers vast opportunities, and setbacks are part of the journey. If you face a setback, see it as a chance for growth and remain resilient. Confidence and perseverance will lead you to success in the end. Learning is fun. Education is a celebration. Success in inevitable."
