Thalapathy Vijay has been hitting the headlines for non filmi reasons in the past few weeks after Judge M. Subramaniam passed an order on a nine year pending case involving a Rolls Royce car purchased by the mass hero in 2012. Vijay had imported the luxury car and had sought exemption of the entry tax whilst he paid all other applicable duties and taxes.
It is said that since there was no clarity from the concerned department the leading star had approached the court and the case has been going on for nine years. Judge M. Subramaniam in his order fined Vijay a sum of rupees one lakh and slammed him in the order writing "“These actors portray themselves as champions of social justice. Their movies are against corrupt activities in the society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner, which is not in consonance with the provisions of the Statutes. “Filing a writ petition, avoiding payment of Entry tax and keeping the writ petition pending for about nine years, can never be appreciated and it is not made clear even now, whether the Entry tax as applicable has been paid by the petitioner or not".
Vijay then went for an appeal and the petition was heard today by the division bench comprising of judges M. Duraiswamy and R. Hemalatha. Senior advocate Vijay Narayan who appeared on behalf of Vijay put forth his arguments strongly that Justice Subramaniam's harsh words against his client were uncalled for and should be removed. He pointed out that his client was one among hundreds who appeal for entry tax exemption and it is unjust to portray him as an antinational. It was brought to the court's notice that Vijay was in no way responsible for the case pending for close to a decade. He also assured that his client is willing to pay the full tax amount within a week.
Following the strong arguments the division bench has passed an interim stay on the single judge's order. August 31st has been set as the date for the court to hear the plea of Vijay to expunge judge Subramaniam's harsh remarks and also cancel the rupees one lakh fine. Thalapathy fans are rejoicing on social media that a favoroble order has come for their idol.
