Thalapathy Vijay for the past few weeks was the subject of debates as controversy arose over entry tax payment for his luxury Rolls Royce Ghost car. He imported the swank vehicle in 2012 from London for a huge sum of money and paid all the necessary taxes and duties. As per the norms, he requested an exemption from the entry tax which ran in tens of lakhs.
The case regarding the entry tax was going on for nine long years and recently came up for hearing. The single judge S.M. Subramaniam slammed the leading South Indian hero for seeking the entry tax exemption and also fined him rupees one lakh to be paid to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's COVID 19 fund. A part of his orders read "Tax evasion is to be construed as an anti-national habit, attitude and mindset and unconstitutional. These actors are portraying themselves as champions to bring social justice to society. Their pictures are against corrupt activities in society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner, which is not in consonance with the provisions of the statutes."
Vijay went for an appeal and the division bench comprising of judges M Duraiswamy and R Hemalatha. He sought the expungement of the harsh remarks by the single judge and also wanted exemption from paying the one lakh rupees fine to the fund as he already contributed 25 lakhs for the same cause.
The judges stayed the previous judgement but ordered Vijay to pay the entry tax in full and stated that the removal of the single judge's statement and the fine withdrawal will be decided in four weeks time.
The Commercial Taxes department sources have revealed that Vijay who had already paid rupees eight lakhs has now paid the remaining rupees thirty-two lakhs (Total rupees forty lakhs) in full. The next hearing on the case is at the end of the month when the other prayers of the mass hero will be heard by the bench.
