Thalapathy Vijay's 'Mersal' directed by Atlee and produced by Sri Thenadal Studios became a major blockbuster in 2017 when it released as a grand Diwali attraction with collections reportedly upward of 200 Crores worldwide.  Before that ofcourse the teaser which released on the 21st of September created a record for the most viewed in South Indian garnering a staggering 11.21 million in just 24 hours.  The teaser holds the world record for the fastest to get 150K likes and touched the 50 thousand likes in just 5 minutes.  On the whole the videos relating to 'Mersal' have been the most viewed and most liked ever according to YouTube which includes the most viewed and liked lyrical song, most viewed audio teaser, most liked video song, most liked promo song,   

On YouTube, among South Indian actors only Thalapathy Vijay has 25 videos with 100 thousand likes and 'Mersal' videos account for 16 of them.  The songs of the blockbuster movie in Tamil as well as the Telugu version 'Adhirinthi' have got 1million likes together.  

Coming to the song 'Aalaporaan Tamilan' , it has got 10 million views in 20 days which is a record. The song teaser itself is the number one in South India with 150K likes and the lyric video and song video are close to touching the same magical figure soon.  

Among the overseas releases from India, 'Mesal' ranks 23rd with 11.89 million USD collections.  The National Film Awards UK gave the Best Film and the Best Actor Award to Thalapathy Vijay. In France the film recorded 32471 entries which is the highest for for Tamil.  

When released on ZEE Tamil the film got the highest ever WTP which 8,5 Points. The Chennai city collection of 9.23 Crores is the seventh highest. In South India the most liked movie on BookMyShow is 'Mersal' and is the most talked about movie in India on Twitter for the year 2017.  The hashtag #Mersal became a record breaker on Twitter with  1.7million tweets in three days. It was also the first film in Tamil to get a dedicated emoji on the same platform.

In the neighbouring Kerala it is common knowledge that Thalapathy Vijay holds a huge fan following and 'Mersal' with a collection of 21.9 Crores has now raced to the number one spot of the top ten Vijay movies there. 

At the awards 'Mersal' scored big in the Vikatan Awards with Thalapathy Vijay getting the Best Actor, A.R.Rahman the Best Music Composer, Shreya Ghosal the Best Singer and Komal Shahini the Best Costume Design.  At the Anna University TechoFes 2018, 'Mersal' was the toast of the evening with the Best awards to Thalapathy Vijay's lead performance, S.J.Suriya for villain, T. Muthuraj for Art direction, Shobi for Best Dance Choreography, Sathyaprakash and Pooja Vaidyanathan for Singers, Vivek for lyrics, G.K. Vishnu for choreography and the Best Direction award for Atlee.
