Thalapathy Vijay's dialogues on various contemporary issues like GST, demonization, digital India and need for free medical care in the blockbuster movie 'Mersal' created a furore among the Tamil Nadu BJP leaders who went all guns blazing against the mass hero.

Vijay has got support from unexpected quarters as Bollywood superstar turned BJP MP, Shatrughan Sinha has come out in full support and has gone on to call him a powerful hero.  “Why is it such a crime if Vijay who is a very powerful Tamil actor, reminds us that the poor in our country desperately need healthcare?” he has questioned and has also added "Let’s (BJP) admit out mistake, let’s roll back. Let’s not be ashamed to say we are sorry. Instead of attacking actors and artistes for drawing attention to anomalies in the workings of our democracy, we should applaud them. Valid criticism must be equally welcome from Amar, Akbar and Anthony,” he added.

Shatrughan Sinha known for his absolute hard hitting and straightforward talk has also criticized the Tamil Nadu wing of his party by stating “Has anyone heard the Prime Minister Narendra Modi or any of the top leaders commenting on the issue? It is only some elements in our party who are eager to prove that they are more loyal than the others,”
