Superstar Rajinikanth in recent times is keen to work with young filmmakers and opted for Pa. Ranjith in 'Kabali' and 'Kaala' which were critically acclaimed and Karthik Subbaraj in 'Petta' which was an out and out commercial blockbuster hit.
Rajini okayed dark comedy specialist Nelson of 'Kolamavu Kokila' and 'Doctor' fame for 'Thalaivar 169' to be produced by Sun Pictures and the project was officially announced. Nelson's most recent film 'Beast' starring Thalapathy Vijay recieved mixed reviews from critics while it is said to be strong at the box office returns.
Rumours started spreading that Rajini was not pleased with Nelson's handling of 'Beast' and that he was contemplating a change of director. It was further said that Atlee and Desing Periyasamy are in the reckoning to take over the reigns.
Nelson subtly answered his detractors by adding 'Thalaivar 169' in his social media profile. Superstar Rajinikanth has also confirmed that he is working with Nelson by changing his profile picture to the still that was shot when the film was announced.
