In one of the worst school shootings in the United States in over a decade, an 18-year-old gunman shot dead at least 19 children and two adults after opening fire at an elementary school in Texas.
The massacre happened at Robb Elementary School in the Latino town of Uvalde in Texas. The gunman murdered 19 children and 2 adults as he went from classroom to classroom before being killed by law enforcement. Even though the motive behind the act wasn’t immediately clear, it has been reported that the teenager also shot his own grandmother before fleeing from the scene and launching the attack at the school.
In addition to the deaths, several children and adults have been seriously injured and are currently undergoing treatment at the Uvalde Memorial Hospital. A message on the school’s website read, “Robb Elementary Parents, please do not pick up students at this time. Students need to be accounted for before they are released to your care. You will be notified to pick up students once all are accounted for.”
Addressing the public hours after the massacre, US President Joe Biden called for new gun restrictions. “As a nation we have to ask, when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God’s name are we going to do what has to be done? Why are are willing to live with this carnage?” he asked.
