Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet' gets rave reviews even before its staggered release

Christopher Nolan's upcoming grand cinematic spectacle 'Tenet' is all set to open tomorrow August 26th in a staggered manner in Europe due to many theater chains yet to open fully across the world. The US release is a week later on 3rd September and its uncertain when it will reach India.

'Tenet' a mind-bending SciFi espionage thriller with the distinct Nolan touch stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh and our own Dimple Kapadia, The trailers have already upped the expectations for the film to beyond sky level and the advance critic reviews seem to suggest that the film has almost lived up to it if not surpassed.

Variety reviewer Guy Lodge has written The sheer meticulousness of Nolan’s grand-canvas action aesthetic is enthralling as if to compensate for the stray loose threads and teasing paradoxes of his screenplay — or perhaps simply to underline that they don’t matter all that much. ‘Tenet’ is no holy grail, but for all its stern, solemn posing, it’s dizzy, expensive, bang-up entertainment of both the old and new school. Right now, as it belatedly crashes a dormant global release calendar, it seems something of a time inversion in itself.”

The New York Times: Jessica Klang is a little more subdued The film is undeniably enjoyable, but its giddy grandiosity only serves to highlight the brittleness of its purported braininess. This would hardly be a criticism of any other blockbuster. But Nolan is, by several exploding football fields, the foremost auteur of the ‘intellectacle,’ which combines popcorn-dropping visual ingenuity with all the sedate satisfactions of a medium-grade Sudoku. Within the context of this self-created brand of brainiac entertainment, ‘Tenet’ meets all expectations, except the expectation that it will exceed them.”

Robbie Collin of The Telegraph has put up a warning sign The depth, subtlety and wit of Pattinson and Debicki’s performances only becomes fully apparent once you know where ‘Tenet’ is going, or perhaps that should be where it’s been. Still confused? Don’t be. Or rather do be, and savour it. This is a film that will cause many to throw up their hands in bamboozlement – and many more, I hope, to clasp theirs in awe and delight.”

Jonathan Romney of Los Angeles Times makes it more layman-friendly “It’s basically espionage adventure, but with a science fiction backbone: Nolan ups the ante on “Mission: Impossible” by making the impossibility not just physical but quantum physical. And he goes about it expertly, bullishly and with giddily perverse intent to bewilder.”

The advance reviews of 'Tenet' seem to be a mix of awe for the grandiose filmmaking and some hairpulling for the scientific or more precisely quantum physical elements of the screenplay. But isn't that wicked pleasure of being taken for a bewildering ride that Nolan fans want and are waiting for. The critics have also given the thumbs up for the cinematography and the performances of all the lead cast members. Rest assured that this near-masterpiece from the most enigmatic filmmaker of this generation will surely beat the pandemic hands down at the box office.
