Rape 'jokes' are insensitive. Even star filmmakers like Trivikram Srinivas have resorted to such 'comedy' occasionally and haven't been spared by critics. When those in the mass media invent crass jokes, that too on women, nothing can be worse.
Recently, a journalist went to a town in Andhra Pradesh to find out if those women wearing nighties are being fined by village elders. In solidarity with the women, the journo wore a nightie.
A TV journalist named Tammali Ravikumar saw an opportunity here to cook up an offensive 'joke'. "She went in a nightie because it's a story related to nighties. She would be ready to be raped if the story is related to rape," he wrote on Facebook. The post naturally shocked the woman, who rightly shamed the man from her profession.
To its credit, the TV channel has fired Ravikumar, citing its HR policy. The guy has apologized publicly but he should have realized his folly when the woman called him up and asked him to remove the post.
