After being prosecuted for allegedly letting different illegal activity take place on the messaging network, Pavel Durov, the creator and CEO of Telegram, is under legal hot fire in France. Durov has been accused by French authorities of not stopping drug trafficking, other illicit activity, including child sexual abuse content from proliferating over Telegram.
Paris prosecutors claim that Durov has been accused of not producing documentation requested by law enforcement and supporting the spread of drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering, and child pornography. Allegations that Durov refused to help with lawful wiretaps and let criminal groups utilize the platform for illicit transactions point to Telegram's apparently mostly unresponsive attitude to authorities.
Arrested on Saturday, the 39-year-old Russian-born billionaire was granted bail under rigorous terms including living in France and twice weekly police reporting. He also had to pay a $5.6 million bond.
The Dubai-based corporation asserted in a Telegram statement that Durov followed European rules and stated that it had nothing to hide. The comment attacked the idea that the owner of a platform should answer for user abuse of it.
The case highlights the conflict between governments and tech firms like Telegram, which has around a billion users, therefore generating a wider discussion on the balance between freedom of expression and law enforcement. Durov is also under inquiry for allegedly serious acts of violence against one of his children in Paris, a case connected to a prior complaint the child's mother filed in Switzerland.
