Telangana: HC issues notices to Twitter, govt on Covid-19 'communal tweets'
- IndiaGlitz, [Wednesday,June 24 2020]
In March and April, days after the Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi, Coronavirus cases spiked in the country. At that time, a number of social media users trended hashtags that linked the Jihadi ideology with the super-spreader event. On the basis of a petition filed by a lawyer, the Telangana High Court has now issued notices to Twitter, the Union government and the KCR government.
The notices have sought an explanation as to why some of the posts allegedly linking COVID-19 to the Muslim community have not been removed, PTI has reported. Hashtags such as #Islamiccoronavirusjihad, #Coronajihad, #Nizamuddinidiots, and #TablighiJamatVirus have been mentioned in the petition.
The petitioner expects criminal cases against both Twitter and the users who allegedly spread communal hatred. He wants Islamophobic posts to be curbed by the government.
