Are tech firms doing all that they can and should to curb the circulation of offensive content online? As per a Supreme Court observation, the answer is 'No'. The apex court has imposed a fine of Rs. 1 lakh each on Yahoo, Facebook Ireland, Facebook India, Google India, Google Inc, Microsoft and WhatsApp for their failure to curb child porn and rape videos.
Says Sunitha Krishnan, Padmashree awardee and crusader against sex trafficking, "One of the major reasons for increasing impunity in India regarding rapes are the Tech Firms like Facebook, Google and YouTube who are not willing to take accountability for contents like rape videos and child sexually abusive material being circulated through their medium."
These companies had failed to file affidavits detailing steps taken to curb circulation of violent sex videos and child pornography.
