'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' sets a benchmark

As Eros International and Colour Yellow Productions' 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' released this Friday, the family entertainer directed by Aanand L Rai, made a killing at the box office on its opening weekend.

The R. Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut starrer recorded phenomenal weekend collections: Friday 8.85cr, Sat 13.20 cr and Sunday 16.10 cr with a final weekend total Rs. 38.15 cr India.

The film has also registered the highest opening overseas this year, registering approximately 17 crores for the opening weekend.

'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' also went on to defy trends set earlier by other blockbusters and registered Monday figures higher than its opening day collection of Rs 8.90 cr. This makes it a huge achievement for the film, especially since multiplexes always drop ticket rates over the weekdays.

While the film has already been certified a blockbuster by the trade, it also went beyond big A-list superstar names and continues to draw in the crowds over the weekdays, backed by the positive word of mouth, proving yet again that "content is king".

Says a trade source, "Tanu Weds Manu Returns not only did excellent business in its opening weekend but continues to go strong over the weekdays ,while most films show a drop in business on weekdays. The benchmark it has set is reminiscent of old-school blockbuster films that went beyond weekend figures where the film was appreciated for its overall content and not for a particular formula that certifies hit movies".
