'Tanu Weds Manu' is a clear cut success

How the predictions went wrong last week. While 'Tanu Weds Manu' was looking good from the very outset, an average opening was the maximum that one expected from this Madhavan-Kangna Ranaut starrer. Word of mouth was expected to be the key for the film to make any headway and it was expected that an opening in the range of 50% (and that too only for the evening/night shows) would be enough to keep the box office interested.

However, the film belied all expectations as it not just took an opening in the range of 40%-50% but in fact went on to register collections over 70% by the time Friday came to an end. This wasn't all as the Friday collections were amongst the Top-5 of the year so far and in terms of print average, it was the second best only to 'Yamla Pagla Deewana'. There was more to come as the collections only soared further on Saturday and showed a jump in 25%-30% range. Of course on Sunday the collections did show a dip, especially in the evening shows (due to India-England World Cup match) but that was something expected.

In any case, very good collections on Friday and Saturday coupled with the fact that audience as well as critics endorsed the film ensured that the loss of numbers on Sunday evening wasn't harming at all in the overall scheme of things. With more than 11 crores coming in the first weekend, 'Tanu Weds Manu' has been universally liked by the audience which means that this Aanand L Rai directed film will ensure sustained collections over the coming weeks.

There was one more new release of the week - 'Satrangee Parachute' - which went totally unnoticed. As expected, the film opened to empty houses. In any case the film's release was scattered with bare minimum number of prints and that too at selected theaters in the oddest show timings possible. A select few critics who saw the film panned it while there was no audience whatsoever which even bothered to check it out. No wonder, the film had to limp in it's attempt to complete one week at the box office.
