A woman’s husband and her elder son took their own lives after she passed away in a hospital in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district. The woman’s condition had apparently gotten worse after her younger son died by suicide at a COVID-19 centre in Andipatti nearly three months ago.
In May this year, the woman’s younger son Sasikumar (20) had returned to Tamil Nadu from Maharashtra amid the nationwide coronavirus lockdown and was placed in an isolation ward at a COVID-19 centre. A few days after his return, the youth died by suicide on May 17. Unable to bear the loss of her son, the woman, identified as 51-year-old Ramalakshmi, became depressed and stopped consuming food and started neglecting her health as well. She was then admitted to a hospital when her condition became worse. She subsequently passed away on Tuesday night and her husband and elder son perfomed her cremation. Deeply distressed over the fact that they had lost two of their family members, the woman’s husband and son, identified as Manikandan and Vasanth, respectively, hanged themselves to death inside their textile store in Andipatti.
Their bodies were reportedly found by locals who were looking for them. The police are currently investigating the matter to obtain further information.
