Striking a good news for the entire Tamil film fraternity and Tamil movie buffs, the ongoing theatres strike in Tamil Nadu which is in its fourth day has been withdrawn by the Theatre owners. The movie screenings in over 1200 theatres across the state will resume from tomorrow.

Abirami Ramanathan of Tamil Film Chamber of Commerce has announced that in the talks held today between the industry stakeholders and the Government, an amicable solution has been reached. The Government has accepted to form a committee with six representatives from the Government and six representatives from the Kollywood including theatre owners. This committee will have discussions and decide the tax structure and ticket rate for Tamil films.

The theatres across the state were shut from last Monday (July 3) as the TN Government passed an ordinance to levy 30% Entertainment tax on every movie ticket apart from the GST fixed by the Union Government, which will be at the rate of 28% for tickets above Rs.100 and 18% for tickets below Rs.100. The theatre owners protested this decision and wanted the government to withdraw the Entertainment tax levied through the local bodies. Hence, they went on strike and closed the movie halls for the past four days.

Now the strike has been withdrawn and the movies will be screened in theatres from tomorrow (July 7, 2017). As there is no new release scheduled for this weekend, the films released last week, including 'Ivan Thanthiran' are expected to be retained in all the screens.
