The nation has been seeing medical aspirants across several states demanding the postponement of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) scheduled to be held tomorrow (September 13) amid the coronavirus pandemic situation. However, the Supreme Court recently dismissed a number of petitions seeking postponement of the exams.

A 19-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu's Madurai, identified as Jothi Sri Durga, who was preparing for NEET, ended her life at her house in the early hours of Saturday. She had been attending coaching classes to take up the exam for the second time. In her suicide note, the girl had reportedly mentioned that she would disappoint her parents if she failed to secure a medical seat. She also left an audio note where she apologized to her mother for the decision, mentioning that people had too many expectations from her. The girl was preparing for the exam on Friday night as well but after her family fell asleep, she went to the hall and hung herself off the ceiling. An inquiry regarding the incident has been initiated by a team led by Tallakulam police inspector Malaisamy.

NEET, which follows the CBSE syllabus, puts the students of Tamil Nadu who follow the state board syllabus at a major disadvantage. Medical aspirant Anitha took her own life after she failed to clear the entrance exam in 2017, which initiated a major uproar in the state. Ever since, people have been seeking the cancellation of the medical entrance exam in Tamil Nadu until now.
