After over hundred days of seeing a gradual decrease in the number of Covid-19 cases across Tamil Nadu, the state recorded over 10,000 cases yet again on Thursday. It has also been reported that the number of active cases in TN has increased by 93 percent in less than a month.
Amid growing concerns over the second wave of the viral infection and yet another lockdown, Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar mentioned in an interview with The Hindu on Friday that a second lockdown was not on the cards as of now and that the government hoped for better public cooperation. "We are looking to curb the transmission from the primary sources. Measures to avoid overcrowding, including the closure of schools and colleges, are being taken. Public cooperation is essential to control the spread of the infection. A lockdown, as was done last year, is not being considered as of now," the Health Minister was quoted as saying.
Tamil Nadu registered 1971 new positive cases of Covid-19 on Friday, bringing the total number of cases to 8,75,190. Among the cities, Chennai alone reported 700 fresh cases. A total of 1,08,612 people in the state have been vaccinated against the virus so far.
