Higher Education Minister KP Anbalagan announced on August 31 that the end-semester exams for all final year students across colleges in Tamil Nadu will be held after September 15. The details regarding the exams, including the time table and examination centres, are expected to be released shortly.
Chennai's Anna University had confirmed on August 28 that the final semester exams will be conducted as per the Supreme Court ruling and based on University Grants Commission's (UGC) guidelines. Although it was previously mentioned that the exams would be conducted online, the Higher Education minister stated that the exams would be conducted in-person. "The final semester exams for students in state universities and polytechnic colleges will be held after September 15. The details of exam schedule and exam centres will be released later. Arrangements are being made for all final year students to write exams in person," the minister said in his statement, adding that the students should begin preparations for the tests.
Meanwhile, nationwide protests over conducting the NEET and JEE examinations amid the COVID-19 crisis have been going on for over a month and state government's decision to conduct the final semester exams offline has not gone down well with many. Career consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi reportedly said, "When other students are exempted from semester exams, final year students alone are asked to write exams in person. Anna University is ready with the technology required for conducting online exams. They should conduct online exams for engineering students and maybe consider offline exams for others."
