Govt. of Tamil Nadu has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of India challenging the verdict of the National Green Tribunal allowing neighbouring Kerala to construct a ‘parking lot’ near the contentious Mullai Periyar Dam site.

The Tribunal passed an order a few days back granting Kerala permission to go ahead with its plan to construct a parking lot near the dam site. The Tribunal had been interrogating the ‘parking’ issue for the past few months and had initially restrained Kerla from constructing a parking lot on the site.

Kerala challenged the verdict at the Tribunal which then allowed the State to construct the parking lot albeit by abiding with certain terms and conditions. With the verdict on hand, Kerala has now commenced work on constructing the parking lot which had long been objected to by Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu has now preferred an appeal with the apex Court against the Tribunal’s decision allowing Kerala to have its say in construction of the parking lot.
