A class 10 student from Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore died by suicide after his parents allegedly refused to buy him a smartphone.

The deceased boy, identified as Vignesh, took his own life on July 29 as his parents would not let him buy a smartphone. The police filed a case and launched an investigation soon after the suicide and found that the family did not have much financial troubles and that his father is a cashew farmer. The boy's parents also reportedly told him that they had taken his needs into consideration and would make a decision soon. The boy went ahead and killed himself anyway, according to a report. "The son had been forcing his father to purchase a smartphone for him to attend online classes, like the rest of his friends. Vijay Kumar had assured to buy him the phone, once he makes some money selling the cashews," the police reportedly stated.

The boy used his mother's saree to hang himself off the ceiling fan. He was rushed to the government hospital in Panruti but died the following day.
