A couple of days after 58 employees of Coimbatore's Kalyan Jewellers tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the police registered a case against two officials who allegedly violated the social distancing norms implemented by the government of Tamil Nadu.
When a few employees of the Kalyan Jewellers showroom at the 100-feet Road near Gandhipuram in Coimbatore showed symptoms of the viral infection, their swabs were collected and the test results turned out to show positive cases of the infection. A camp was then organized to test nearly 90 employees of the company, of which 58 of them reportedly tested positive for the virus. "Out of the 90 samples collected from the employees of the showroom, 58 turned out to be positive. All infected persons are admitted to the government facility," G Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Director of Health Services stated. Following this, the police officers booked two officials who had violated the social distancing norms put into effect by the Tamil Nadu government in an effort to contain the spread of the virus. The accused officials allegedly worked without following the physical distancing protocols.
The showroom in Coimbatore has now been closed for fumigation while an FIR has been registered against the two men under Section 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease danger¬ous to life) and 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of Indian Penal Code and Section 3 (penalty) of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.
