A 26-year-old man has been arrested by the cyber crime police in Chennai after he cheated several women in the city through multiple fake accounts on the social media platform Facebook. He allegedly extorted money from them after obtaining personal information from the victims and subsequently blackmailing them.
The accused, identified as Lokesh, hails from Tirumullaivoyal. He is apparently an engineering college dropout and has been employed as a YouTuber. "He befriended women through his fake FB profiles with photos of different people and names and asked them if they were single. He would start intimate conversations and make them divulge details of their personal life while taking screenshots of the entire conversation. Then he would start blackmailing them saying he would share the conversations with their parents and relatives."
"Investigation revealed that he had cheated many women from Coimbatore, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Puducherry using fake profiles and one of the victims is a woman hailing from Malaysia," the police reportedly added. A case was registered against the accused after a college student filed a complaint with the police saying she was threatened by the man on social media.
