Around 400 students in Tamil Nadu tested positive for Covid-19 ever since schools were reopened in the state on September 1 for classes 9 to 12, as per a statement by the State Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan. He also mentioned that infection has been contained effectively in the state so far but still the health department has been monitoring the situation closely.

While speaking at a webinar organized on the topic 'Back to school: challenges and opportunities' organized by UNICEF in association with Press Institute of India, J Radhakrishnan reportedly stated that even though students have started testing positive after the schools were reopened, the situation was not alarming and most of the cases were isolated and sporadic. Nearly 16 female students from a private school in Coimbatore district tested positive for the infection last week and the school management had announced that they would reopen their premises tomorrow (October 1) after closing it for fumigation.

TN Health Minister Ma Subramanian had earlier specified that schools would be sealed immediately in case of an infection. He had said, If students or teachers test positive in any school, the institution will be sealed immediately and sanitisation and other SOPs will be followed. Those infected with Covid will be given immediate medical help. Random tests will be conducted in schools across the state.
