Three class 9 students from the Pudhuchattram government higher secondary school in Namakkal were expelled and issued transfer certificates after they allegedly misbehaved and mocked their visually impaired History teacher during class. A video of the incident went viral on social media, causing outrage among the public.
On the basis of recommendations from the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), the three students were given transfer certificates (TCs) by the Head Master. The incident reportedly happened on Friday, when in the middle of the teacher's lecture, the students began walking around and dancing in front of him. While a video of the same surfaced online, the students' misbehaviour was brought to the attention of the school Head Master and the PTA members by the visually impaired teacher. However, despite the expulsion, the school has apparently taken steps to enroll the students in other government schools in the neighbourhood.
Namakkal District Education Officer Balasubramanian was quoted as saying by The Indian Express, "We were having a meeting during which we came to know about this incident through news channels. It was also uploaded on YouTube. We immediately checked with the concerned school headmaster who visited the school and enquired about it. Members of the PTA and the Teachers’ Association were invited and a joint decision was taken to dismiss the students. The headmaster called the parents of the three students and issued the Transfer Certificate."
