While the world and the rest of the country have been witnessing the coronavirus outbreak for over two months now, Tamil Nadu has been recording the highest number of COVID-19 positive cases the city has ever witnessed in the last few weeks, despite the nationwide lockdown situation.
On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu recorded a total of 776 cases of COVID-19, among which 567 cases were registered in Chennai. 7 people had succumbed to the illness while 987 people had reportedly recovered and were discharged home. A recent report suggests that 25 patients who had completely recovered and were discharged home, tested positive for the virus again. Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar had reportedly called it a big challenge. Regarding the co-morbid conditions that have remained the leading cause of serious illnesses or deaths in patients, the minister stated, "We have formed 12 committees for each co-morbid condition such as renal disease, cancer, diabetes and hypertension, with doctors from the government and private sector. We will inform them on what they should do and urge them to follow doctors’ advice. Doctors should provide protocol-based care for them. This is to prevent deaths despite the co-morbidities."
As on May 22, a total of 118654 cases have been registered across India and 3585 people have died. Tamil Nadu has reported 13967 cases and 95 deaths.
