The tragic death by suicide of leading actor and music composer Vijay Antony's daughter Meera shook the entire Tamil speaking world and fans from all over the country. However as reported by us earlier the unruly behaviour of the media and individuals posing as one appalled everyone.
It was considered transgressive when the media competed to capitalize on the tragic death of the teenager and forced interviews with celebrities who came to express their condolences. While some people, including producer SR Prabhu, have expressed their condemnation, the Tamil Film Producers Council has said that the media will no longer be allowed in the funerals of film industry personalities.
Bharathiraja, the president of this association, said in a statement: "Death is cruel. Untimely deaths are even worse. When you meet such an event, your ties and friendships will be disturbed. You will be stunned and don't know what to do. It will be impossible to console the dear ones at that time. Words cannot console. Standing by the bereaved is the only thing that is possible by friends. Even that precious time that we want to spend with the affected family is pushed beyond our reach by recent media activity. Unnecessary crowds gather at film celebrities who have lost their dear ones."
The veteran filmmaker added 'Earlier the media had ethics and would not film such unfortunate events. Now with the rise of social networking sites everything has changed. The media seems to have no morality or sensitivity. They enter the house of death and steal the scene of grief. Without our permission they mercilessly take pictures of our faces. This is not fair at all. As a senior artiste and president of the Tamil Film Producers Association, I strongly condemn the activities of the media. I request that the media not be allowed without the permission of the police and those concerned.
