Union Minister of State for Law & Justice B.B. Chaudary has categorically told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that Tamil can never be allowed as the ‘official language’ of the High Court of Madras.

The Minister said that the Centre had issued a notification to the Govt. of Tamil Nadu intimating that its request to allow Tamil as the Court language in the High Court of Madras stood rejected. The Minister was responding to a similar query raised by dissident AIADMK M.P. Sasikala Pushpa in the Upper House of Parliament.

Tamil Nadu had, way back in 2006, passed a resolution seeking Presidential assent for making Tamil as the official language in High Court of Madras. The request was formally turned down in 2012 after the Centre deliberated on the issue with the apex Court.

The recent notice said that the full Court of the Supreme Court had advised ‘no further’ action to the Centre on the issue which meant that Tamil won’t be allowed a the official language in the High Court of Madras.
