'Sye Raa' posted unimaginably low numbers in Hindi on Wednesday. Despite it being a public holiday, the magnum opus couldn't get more than Rs 2.60 Cr (nett) in India. The producers and distributors of the Hindi version had extremely high hopes from the movie, given that it was touted as a war drama with a difference.
"The Chiranjeevi-starrer doesn't stand anywhere in comparison to 'Saaho'. Chiru's unfamiliarity has taken its toll. The film released in 1200 screens and this is not small. It should have mopped up a big number," says a source.
Was publicity lacking? "There was publicity but it couldn't create a buzz. When it comes to cinema, competition plays a determinant role. 'Sye Raa' has been trumped by 'WAR', which has created a BO record by netting Rs 50 Cr," the source adds.
But there is still hope. "Even a film like 'KGF' didn't roar at the BO right from day 1. Let's hope for the best. Many have liked it in Hindi," a commentator analyzes.
Directed by Surender Reddy, 'Sye Raa' released in 4,600 screens worldwide.
