If you have watched ‘Veere Di Wedding’, you know what we’re talking about. The iconic(?) masturbation scene by Swara Bhaskar. Well, many had objections to it while many appreciated the makers for a bold depiction.
But here’s what Swara’s mother Ira bhaskar who is a film historian with a Ph.D from Tisch School of Arts and a professor of Cinema Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru university had to say. Stating that sexuality in Indian cinema was something that was not directly expressed, Ira Bhaskar noted that songs have taken that function in regional cinema.
Ira bhaskar who was proud of her daughter’s performance in the movie also noted films like ‘Fire’, ‘Lipstick Under My Bhurka’, and ‘Veere di Wedding’ which shows women to be sexually active. She has also expressed hop that there is a long way to go when women can be portrayed realistically.
