Last year, in 2018, actor and BJP leader S Ve Shekhar expressed his criticism of women journalists on his Facebook page. Following this, based on a complaint filed by Secretary Mitar Moithin on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Journalists Protection Association, the Cyber Crime Unit of the Chennai Central Crime Branch registered a case under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Women Act.
A charge sheet was filed in the special court that hears cases against MPs and MLAs in the district collectorate office complex in Chennai in 2019. Judge G. Jayavel, who presided over the case, ruled today after completing the investigation, stating that the allegations in the complaint have been proved beyond doubt.
Under the Indian Penal Code Section 504 for disturbing the peace, Section 509 for intimidation, and the Prevention of Atrocities against Women Act, actor SV Shekhar was sentenced to one month imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15,000.
After S Ve Shekhar paid the fine amount, the judge accepted his petition to file an appeal against the sentence in the Madras High Court and suspended the sentence.
