Sushant Singh Rajput: Detective Byomkesh Bakshy's dhoti projects national identity

Similarities are constantly being drawn between two iconic detectives; Byomkesh Bakshy and Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is a popular detective internationally, just as Byomkesh Bakshy is an extremely popular Indian detective. Both the characters have trademark attire. While Sherlock Holmes is always seen in a hat, Byomkesh Bakshy is always seen wearing a dhoti.

In Dibakar Banerjee's 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' Byomkesh is seen wearing a dhoti in the entire film. Since both the films, 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' are period films, these pieces of clothing belong to the period in which the film is set in and belong to the attire of that era.

Throughout the film lead hero, Sushant Singh Rajput, is wearing a dhoti paired with various shirts and kurtas. The dhoti is very important to the detective just as the hat is an important accessory to Sherlock. This is because the dhoti was made for the Indian environment and is traditional Indian attire.

Byomkesh is an Indian detective and the dhoti projects his national identity to the entire world and reflects his Indian essence. Also, a lot of great Indians wore dhotis and did great things and Byomkesh Bakshy is one of them. It is also a very comfortable and cool piece of garment. Talking on this point, Dibakar Banerjee shared, "The whole point of the Dhoti is that it was made for the Indian environment and some of the coolest people on the planet like Emperor Ashoka, Chandrashekhar Azad, Mahatma Gandhi and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy wore dhotis and did some of the coolest things that got them famous. Also only those who have worn a dhoti know how cool it can be in the physical sense too. I would recommend Dhoti to a cool Indian anytime."

It can be noted, Dibakar Banerjee's 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' is set in 1943, during the second world war. Adding to this further, Sushant said, "Dhoti, as an Indian traditional costume, contains, the very impression of Indianness, needful to project our national identity, before the entire world. Byomkesh being the original indian detective reflects the very same essence...that's why dhoti ..!"

'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' is set to release this week on 3rd April.
