Court orders against Suriya seeking exemption in income tax case – details

It seems to be the season of popular Kollywood star cases coming up for hearing especially with their tax exemption appeals.  Earlier Thalapathy Vijay and Dhanush were denied exemptions from entry taxes for their luxury vehicles and now another case filed by Suriya this time has been dismissed.

The income tax department conducted raids on Suriya’s properties in the year 2010 and taking into consideration the financial years 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 and orders to pay the tax in 2011.  Suriya appealed to the department’s tribunal but the orders were upheld there to pay the amount of rupees three crores, eleven lakhs and ninety six thousand for the two assessment periods.

Suriya approached the court in 2018 praying that since the income tax department delayed the case by three years he should be exempted from paying the one percent interest levied on the tax amount.  He also pointed out that he is a regular taxpayer with no defaults and he has the right to seek the exemption.

The case came up for hearing and judge M. Subramaniam dismissed Suriya’s petition citing that he should have submitted his accounts within 45 days of the raid but did so with delay.  The council of the IT department argued that Suriya did not cooperate during the assessment procedures and failed to submit the required documents and hence the right to levy the interest is legal.  The judge dismissed Suriya’s petition and ruled in favor of the IT department.

On the professional front after recently appearing in ‘Navarasa’ Suriya two films are racing towards completion namely ‘Jai Bhim’ directed by T.G. Gnanavel and ‘Etharkkum Thunindhavan’ directed by Pandiraj and produced by Sun Pictures.
