In 2019, 40 jawans were martyred in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack. Days later, India launched surgical strikes on Pakistan as revenge. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Monday said that there is no proof that the Balakot surgical strikes were launched. He indirectly suggested that the Indian government as well as the military lied about the attacks.
Digvijaya Singh's statements have turned controversial. The Congress party has been accused of promoting "anti-national" politics by the BJP, which added that the former Madhya Pradesh CM was casting doubts on what the military had said.
Trying to do damage control, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh clarified that the views expressed by Digvijaya Singh are his own and do not reflect the position of Congress. "Surgical strikes were carried out before 2014 by the UPA government. Congress has supported and will continue to support all military actions that are in the national interest," he added.
BJP functionary Priti Gandhi said that it was Digvijaya Singh who floated the theory that the 26/11 Mumbai attacks were an act of Hindu terror. "He is now asking for the evidence of surgical strikes. Whenever they open their mouths, it is only for Pakistan," she added.
