Can women enter Sabarimala temple? SC's landmark verdict

Earlier a ban was imposed on women between the ages of 10 and 50 to not enter the Sabarimala temple premises. The ban was a subject of heated debate and controversy for a lot of years. Now the country’s apex court has put a full stop to it with its historic verdict.

The Supreme Court has removed the ban, thereby allowing women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple. This comes in a series of landmark decisions taken by the court following the decriminalizing gay sex and adultery. The Chief Justices Dipak Mishra and AM Khanwilkar said that devotion can’t be subject to gender discrimination.

However, Justice Indu Malhotra, the lone woman on the bench stated that it wasn’t for the courts to decide which religious practices should be done away with. The head priest of Sabarimala temple Kandararu Rajeevrau said that he was disappointed but also noted that he accepts the verdict.
