Kalaipuli S Thanu is the man who gave the Superstar tag to Rajinikanth more than three decades ago. The distributor turned front line producer is renowned for his novel marketing which ensured that a record number of films have been superhits only on his efforts.
Way back in 1995 itself Thanu was the first to use 24 sheets posters of Superstar Rajinikanth, Arjun and Nalini starrer Yaar`. Those times a four sheeter was considered huge. For the 1987 Koolikaran` a never before never again large sized banner of Vijayakanth pulling a rickshaw was placed and passers by would strain their necks to fully view it. For Kamal Haasan`s Aalavandhaan` in one day 22 full page ads were given in the newspapers. This was also the first film for which foreign crew worked on the graphics and stunts and also the first film to use motion capture camera. Vijay`s Sachein` was the first film for which matte finish and gloss finish posters were used. For Vikram`s Kandaswamy` the invitation was a video screen in which a 8 minute trailer of the film will play when opened. Now for the mother of them all Kabali`, Thanu has made a first of its kind tieup with AirAsia and painted Superstar Rajinikanth`s gangster look on five planes which will fly from Bangalore to Hyderabad, Bangalore to Cochin, Bangalore to Pune, Bangalore to Thailand and Bangalore to Malaysia. The Kabali` flights will start operating one week before the release of the film.
In the past four months Thanu has changed five designs of the huge banner kept at the headmast of Sathyam theater and after the release of Kabali` has plans of changing it every day. Sources close to him tell us that he is very friendly with the people who paste posters in the city and he too will participate with them after hosting a grand lunch for them. No doubt Kalaipuli S Thanu is the King of Promotions.
