With Sujoy Ghosh as well as Tigmanshu Dhulia finally finding good recognition after being in the industry for close to one decade, it is pretty much a red carpet arrival for the bunch of new-age filmmakers who know how to balance commercial aspects with art aesthetics.
It is apparent in the way 'Kahaani' continues to find an audience for itself. In the times when piracy is unstoppable and the suspense genre which is known for not quite holding itself at the theatres, 'Kahaani' has broken all myths and found immense footfalls for itself. The film's collections were massive as near 20 crore were added in the second week, hence resulting in a total of close to 45 crore. The film is now exceeding expectations in a big way and would definitely crossing the 50 crore mark. A superhit, it is welcome news for the industry as such middle-of-the-road cinema is being accepted as well.
Same held good for 'Paan Singh Tomar' as well which is now a semi-hit after running strong for three weeks in succession. With collections over 13 crores and expectation of 15 crores milestone being crossed, this is now the highest grosser ever for director Tigmanshu Dhulia whose last success was 'Saheb Biwi aur Gangster'.
'Chaurahen', 'Say Yes To Love' and 'Zindagi Tere Naam' - Three releases from the last week sunk without any trace. In fact so miserable were the collections for these films that they read in thousands and not even lakhs at most centres. With disastrous response to new releases, it is only further established that it is films like these which are made in budget of under 5 crores that are the major most contributor to the red in the box office.
