Popular stunt choreographer Kanal Kannan has worked in hundreds of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannanda and Hindi films with great success. Recently he joined the national ruling party the BJP as an office bearer. A few days back speaking in Srirangam at a function without mentioning the name he urged the people to demolish the statue of Periyaar.
Kannan in his speech at the event for "Reclaiming Hindu Rights" said in Tamil "They say that today is the closing ceremony of the campaign for the retrieval of Hindu rights. But, today is the opening ceremony, because one lakh people visit the temple every day to pray to Sri Ranganathan. Hindus' upliftment will be complete on the day when a statue in front of the temple is demolished since it is a statue of the one who said there is no God,".
Following a complaint from the Periyaar Dravidar Kazhagam the police registered cases under 2 sections (153& 505(1)(b) ) for inciting riot and enmity among the public by spreading slanderous information. The celebrity then was absconding for a few days and tried to get anticipatory bail.
A city court refused anticipatory bail to Kanal Kannan citing that it is necessary for him to be arrested for interrogation considering the gravity of the crime. Earlier today the Tamil Nadu police arrested Kannan in Pondicherry and brought him to Chennai.
